As mentioned in our article about the end of Lent Build, a group of dedicated volunteers from MPPC taught a quilting class to women in Getsemaní.  They have also put together this fabulous video so that you can see their hard work in action!

Como mencionamos en nuestro artículo sobre la finalización del Evento de Cuaresma, un grupo de voluntarios dedicados de MPPC lideraron un taller sobre cómo hacer edredones a un grupo de mujeres en Getsemaní.  También han creado este fabuloso video para que ustedes puedan ver su trabajo en acción!

Getsemaní Eagerly Awaits New Center

In rural communities throughout El Salvador, community centers are important multi-purpose spaces.  This is where all the action happens: meetings, celebrations, weddings, religious holidays, workshops, medical clinics and many other activities.  That is why it is oftentimes top priority on a community’s wish list.

Such is the case of Getsemaní Community, which has been dreaming about a community center for a long time. They currently meet at the president’s house or sometimes at the park, if it is not raining. Community leaders decided to move forward on this project last year, when they approached the Ahuachapán municipal government and requested support.  To their delight, the municipal government did all the technical planning for the community center, including the building designs.  Because of generous volunteer and financial support from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, this project will not stop at the planning stage.

In April, the Getsemaní ADESCO, the Ahuachapán municipal government and Habitat El Salvador signed an agreement of cooperation for the construction of the community center. Getsemaní is contributing unskilled labor. The Ahuachapán municipal government is contributing land, 50% of the skilled labor, some tools and equipment as well as transportation. Habitat El Salvador (with financial support from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans) is providing construction supplies, the remaining skilled labor, and some tools and equipment.

Construction began on May 7^th.  On May 9th we held a ground-breaking ceremony in which Ahuachapán mayor Rafael Morán participated. Two Habitat masons, two masons sponsored by the municipal government and seven community members will be helping with the construction daily. Thrivent volunteers have also been joining them. We plan to finish construction by the end of July, and the Getsemaní community is already looking forward to using this new space!

Getsemaní Anticipa Nuevo Centro

En las comunidades rurales en El Salvador, los centros comunitarios son espacios de multi-uso importantes.  Es donde ocurren todas las actividades: reuniones, celebraciones, bodas, festivales religiosas, talleres, jornadas médicas, y muchas más.  Por eso muchas veces construir un centro comunitario es una prioridad.

Este es el caso para la Comunidad Getsemaní, la cual ha estado soñando con un centro comunitario por mucho tiempo.  Actualmente se reúnen en la casa de la presidente, o en el parque si no está lloviendo.  Los líderes comunitarios decidieron avanzar con este proyecto el año pasado, cuando se acercaron a la alcaldía de Ahuachapán para solicitar apoyo.  Estaban felices cuando la alcaldía elaboró la carpeta técnica, incluyendo los planos del edificio.  Con el apoyo financiero y voluntario de la Financiera Luterana Thrivent, el proyecto no se detendrá en la fase de planificación.

En abril, la ADESCO de Getsemaní, la alcaldía de Ahuachapán, y Hábitat El Salvador firmaron un convenio de cooperación para la construcción del centro comunitario.  Getsemaní está contribuyendo la mano de obra no calificada.  La alcaldía de Ahuachapán está contribuyendo la tierra, 50% de la mano de obra calificada, y unas herramientas y equipo incluyendo el transporte.  Hábitat El Salvador (con el apoyo financiera de la Financiera Luterana Thrivent) está proveyendo los materiales, la demás mano de obra calificada, unas herramientas y equipo.

La construcción inició el 7 de mayo.  El 9 de mayo realizamos una ceremonia para la colocación de la primera piedra, en la cual se contó con la participación del alcalde de Ahuachapán, Lic. Rafael Morán.  Dos albañiles de Hábitat, dos albañiles patrocinados por la alcaldía, y sietes miembros de la comunidad están ayudando con la construcción a diario.  Los voluntarios de Thrivent estarán apoyando con la construcción.  Esperamos terminar la construcción para los finales de julio, y la Comunidad Getsemaní ya está emocionada por usar el nuevo espacio
