People often ask me questions about El Salvador.  The one that I like best is, “Why do you keep going back?”  This question is the easiest of all and gives me the opportunity to open my heart to “why.”

“Why do I go back?”  I go back because of love.  God has given me a real love for El Salvador and the people who live there. The people have shown great love to me and I guess that’s what happens when we “love others” as God has commanded us: the love becomes reciprocal.  You can’t give it without getting it and you can’t get it without giving it!  God sent me to El Salvador in 2008 to a country whose name, translated, is “The Savior.” He sent me there to teach me and lead me in a new direction that was not about me at all – it was about finally listening to Him and seeing what it was that He had for me to do.  I was finally seeing the world from a whole different perspective, and that perspective came from the hearts of the very people that I thought I had come to help.

I now have friends, real amigos, from El Salvador that have become part of my thoughts, my prayers, my life. They treat me as familia and I cherish the bond that has developed with them. Their faith witness has also greatly impacted me as they have displayed thankfulness and trust in God even while existing on very meager incomes and dwelling in houses without floors.   They are hard-working, generous, friendly, huggable people! Speaking of hugs – I am so humbled and honored that they have given me so many abrazos, so many “no adios – hasta luego or hasta pronto” and have shared tears with me as we parted, not truly knowing if we will, indeed, meet again on this earth, though I have promised that, God-willing, “I will be back to see you next year.”

So, even though El Salvador is a country of great physical beauty, her real beauty is her people. It’s kind of funny because I’m not usually very good at remembering names, but I remember many, many names of my ES friends and I repeat them in a long list as I lift them up to God in prayer regularly.  Yes, I go back because of love: love for God and love for all of them.

I have been humbled, enlightened, instructed, led, and encouraged by my experiences in El Salvador, and I intend to keep coming back as long as God grants me the opportunity.

La gente me pregunta mucho sobre El Salvador.  La pregunta que más me gusta es: “Por qué sigues regresando?”  Esta pregunta es la más fácil de contestar y me da la oportunidad de abrir mi corazón sobre “por qué.”

“Por qué regreso?”  Regreso por el amor.  Dios me ha dado un amor verdadero por El Salvador y la gente que vive allá.  La gente me ha mostrado un gran amor y creo que es lo que pasa cuando “amamos a otros” como Dios nos ha mandado: el amor se vuelve mutuo.  No se puede dar el amor sin recibirlo, y no lo puedes recibir sin darlo!  Dios me mandó a El Salvador en 2008.  Me mandó para enseñarme y guiarme en una nueva dirección donde no todo se trata de mi—se trata de finalmente escuchar a Él y ver lo que Él quiere que yo haga.  Por fin pude ver el mundo de una nueva perspectiva, y esta perspectiva vino de los corazones de la gente a quienes yo pensé que iba a ayudar.

Ahora tengo amigos, verdaderos amigos, de El Salvador quienes son parte de mis pensamientos, mis oraciones, y mi vida.  Me tratan como si fuera familia y yo valoro las amistades que tengo con ellos.  Su fe me ha impactado mucho, y me han mostrado su agradecimiento y confianza en Dios aunque tengan que sobrevivir con muy bajos ingresos en casas con pisos de tierra.  Son personas trabajadoras, generosas, amigables, y abrazables!  Hablando de los abrazos—me siento honrado que tantas personas me han dado tantos abrazos, y que me dicen “no adiós—hasta luego o hasta pronto,” y que han compartido lágrimas conmigo cuando nos partimos, sin saber si de verdad nos volveremos a ver en este mundo pero yo siempre con la promesa que, primero Dios, “les veré el próximo año.”

Aunque El Salvador es un país con mucha belleza de paisaje, su belleza verdadera es su gente.  En general no soy bueno para recordar los nombres, pero me acuerdo de muchos, muchos nombres de mis amigos salvadoreños y los repito en un listado largo cuando rezo a Dios pidiéndole que les cuide.  Sí, yo regreso por amor: amor por Dios y amor por todos ellos.

He recibido lecciones de humildad y he sido ilustrado, enseñado, guiado, y animado por mis experiencias en El Salvador, y pienso regresar siempre que Dios me de la oportunidad.

Everyone knew this was the last workday so emotions were mixed & energy ran high.  Each team continued on their home with renewed determination to get the most done today, if not complete the home they had started.  Team 1 slaved at their home and got to watch the blocks close to the top being set.  Team 2 worked themselves out of a job since their holes were dug.  Team 3 painted the interior of the house a beautiful blue.

At lunch, Steve’s team from Michigan joined us at the community center.  We had a festival of sorts.  Steve made his balloon animals & I printed photos of kids present.  Habitat held a ceremony to give us diplomas; we sang five songs to & with the kids.  It was a heart-wrenching good-bye to all the people throughout the week we had come to know & love.

I had read before we went that “most of us are accustomed to working for a reward.  We get paid for a completed job, and there’s a bonus when our efforts exceed expectation.”  For the most of us we had no idea how & what we would work with.  Even with no money paid for a job well done, the rewards we realized after this week far exceeded what we thought we would feel.  Everyone agreed we were a wonderful group—working together and interacting nicely with the kids & adults alike.  We saw great attitudes amongst the people we were working with.  We felt safe & loved by these people, our brothers & sisters.

Todos sabían que hoy era el último día de trabajo, así que había mucha energía y emociones.  Cada equipo siguió trabajando en la construcción de su casa para hacer lo mejor que se podía, con la meta de terminar la casa.  Equipo 1 terminó viendo casi todos los bloques puestos en la pared.  Equipo 2 se quedó sin trabajo porque terminaron de excavar sus hoyos.  Equipo 3 pintó las paredes interiores un color celeste muy hermoso.

Durante el almuerzo, la brigada de Steve de Michigan llegó al centro comunitario.  Celebramos un tipo de festival.  Steve hizo animales de globos y yo imprimí fotos de los niños.  Hábitat realizó una ceremonia y nos entregó diplomas.  Nosotros cantamos cinco canciones con y para los niños.  Nos fue muy difícil despedirnos de toda la gente que llegamos a conocer y amar durante la semana.

Antes había leído que “la mayoría estamos acostumbrados a trabajar por una recompensa.  Nos pagaban por terminar un trabajo, y hay un bono cuando cumplimos más de  lo esperado.”  Para la mayoría de nosotros, no sabíamos cómo y con qué estaríamos trabajando.  Aunque no nos pagaron por el buen trabajo que hicimos, las recompensas fueron más de lo que esperamos.  Todos estamos de acuerdo que éramos un grupo increíble; trabajamos juntos y compartimos con los niños y adultos.  Vimos buenas actitudes en la gente con quienes trabajamos.  Nos sentimos seguros y amados por estas personas, nuestros hermanos y hermanas.

The Getsemaní community celebrated the inauguration of their new community center on October 27^th!   Over 100 people attended the ceremony, including Ahuachapán mayor Rafael Morán Orellana, volunteers from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, representatives from Getsemaní and other surrounding communities, Habitat El Salvador staff, and delegates from various local and national institutions.  Pastor Andrés Rodríguez of Getsemaní led the blessing of the new building.

Perhaps the most beautiful area of the community center is the back wall, where Getsemaní youth and children painted a mural.  It depicts an ideal community—the type of community that the painters hope Getsemaní will become.  It shows the inhabitants joined together in solidarity and a bird taking food to its chicks in representation of family responsibility.

Getsemaní board president Martha de Sánchez reminded the audience that the community center will serve the community in a variety of ways.  Aside from being the principal space for board and community meetings, it will host vocational workshops (such as sewing and beading) and a small library.  It can also be used as a shelter during disasters.  This versatile space will help meet many of Getsemaní’s needs and is a key part of the developing community.

La comunidad Getsemaní celebró la inauguración de su nuevo centro comunitario el 27 de octubre!  Más de 100 personas participaron en la ceremonia, incluyendo el Alcalde de Ahuachapán, Rafael Morán Orellana, voluntarios de la Financiera Thrivent para Luteranos, representantes de Getsemaní y otras comunidades aledañas, personal de Hábitat El Salvador, y representantes de varias instituciones locales y nacionales.  El Pastor Andrés Rodríguez de Getsemaní lideró la bendición del nuevo edificio.

Quizá la parte más bonita del centro comunitario es la pared trasera, donde los niños y jóvenes de Getsemaní pintaron una mural.  Demuestra una comunidad ideal—el tipo de comunidad que los pintores esperan para Getsemaní.  Muestra a los habitantes unidos en solidaridad y un pájaro llevando comida a sus polluelos en representación de la responsabilidad familiar.

Martha de Sánchez, presidenta de la junta directiva de Getsemaní, se acordó al público que el centro comunitario servirá a la comunidad en muchas maneras.  A parte de ser el espacio principal para las reuniones de la junta y la comunidad, será un espacio para talleres vocacionales (como bisutería y costurera) y una biblioteca.  También se utilizará como un albergue durante desastres.  Este espacio versátil satisfacerá muchas de las necesidades de Getsemaní y es una parte clave del desarrollo de la comunidad.

The neighborhood association held their regular elections for the board of directors in August.  Although Martha de Sánchez was reelected as president, other leadership positions have changed.  The new board is already quite active!

During their first meeting on August 25^th, board members began to develop a manual that will outline how the community center will be managed and maintained on a day-to-day basis.  They are developing a set of rules, which a committee will be in charge of monitoring.  On August 30^th, they hosted a general assembly meeting to which all community members were invited.  They presented their ideas about how the community center will be run and listened to feedback from the assembly participants.  They will take into account these ideas as they continue to develop the manual.

We congratulate the new board of directors on their dedication to making sure that the community center will be a space that the community both uses and respects for many generations.

Construction of the community center is possible due to the generous support of the Ahuachapán municipal government and Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.

La ADESCO de Getsemaní realizó las elecciones para su nueva Junta Directiva en agosto.  Aunque Martha de Sánchez fue elegida nuevamente para servir como presidente, otros puestos de liderazgo han cambiado.  La nueva junta ya está muy activa!

Durante su primera reunión el 25 de agosto, los miembros de la Junta Directiva empezaron a desarrollar un manual que describe como se manejará y mantendrá el nuevo centro comunitario.  Están desarrollando reglas para su uso, y un comité estará a cargo de monitorear que sean cumplidas.  El 30 de agosto realizaron una reunión en la asamblea general a la cual todos los miembros de la comunidad fueron invitados.  Los miembros de la junta presentaron sus ideas sobre cómo manejar el centro comunitario y escucharon la retroalimentación de los participantes de la asamblea.  Estarán tomando en cuenta estas ideas mientras sigan desarrollando el manual.

Felicitamos a la nueva Junta Directiva por su dedicación en asegurar que el centro comunitario sea un espacio que la comunidad utiliza y respeta por muchas generaciones.

Diane Lewicki and Mel Shuey, co-leaders of a recent Thrivent team to El Salvador, kindly agreed to share one of the posts from their team’s trip.

We said farewell to Los Buenos today. It’s bittersweet to say goodbye to these families that have opened their doors and opened our hearts.

It was a beautiful day, the sun was shining, and a slight breeze would waft through once in awhile. It was the day of painting—we painted the three houses these bright Caribbean colors. It gives them a look close to completion, which gives us a sense of accomplishment. As we worked alongside the families, you could see the pride and excitement as they tell us these are their houses. It won’t be long, perhaps just weeks, before they will be able to move in. We can only hope they continue to feel the love that went into each step of the house-building process, not to mention the labor and the sweat from these volunteers who are not used to working this hard.

We worked until lunchtime, when it was time to start the fiesta. The children have been hinting at such a party all week. The boys were so funny, telling each of us chicas that their amigos wanted to dance with us to the live Andean-influenced music group.  We were able to make pupusas with the señoras of the community. There was also a mariachi band. And everyone, including families we hadn’t seen all week, came to the fiesta. There was a presentation of diplomas to our team. There was endless recognition for our volunteerism, which is so humbling when we feel like we all gained so much from this week. Each of the three masons—Saúl, Jovel, and César—prayed for us to have a safe trip home.

And everyone who spoke to us reminded us to come back and see the community. And you know when they say, “Come back! Visit us! Our home is your home,” they really mean it. As we loaded into the van to leave the community, they all followed us. As we drove down the road and looked back, you could see them all following the van, waving goodbye. How could we be this lucky to land in such a special place?

May I remember this feeling in my heart forever.

Nos despidimos de Los Buenos el día de hoy.  Es agridulce decir adiós a estas familias quienes han abiertos sus puertas y a la vez abrir nuestros corazones.

Fue un día hermoso, el sol fue brillante, y nos tocó una brisa de vez en cuando.  Fue un día para pintar—pintamos las tres casas en colores fuertes como el Caribe.  Hace que las casas parezcan casi terminadas, que nos da a nosotros un sentido de satisfacción.  Mientras trabajamos a lado de las familias, se podría ver el orgullo y emoción cuando nos dice que las casas son de ellos.  No se tardarán mucho, quizá unas semanas, en mudarse.  Solamente esperamos que sigan sintiendo el amor que dedicamos a cada paso de construcción, sin mencionar el trabajo y sudor de estos voluntarios quienes no están acostumbrados a trabajar tan duro.

Trabajamos hasta la hora de almuerzo, y después empezó la fiesta.  Los niños han estado insinuando que habrá una fiesta durante toda la semana.  Los niños fueron muy chistosos, diciendo a todas las chicas que sus amigos quisieron bailar con nosotros al ritmo de la música Andina en vivo.  Pudimos hacer pupusas con las señoras de la comunidad.  También hubo una banda de mariachi.  Y todos, incluyendo a las familias que no habíamos vistos durante toda la semana, participaron en la fiesta.  Hubo una entrega de diplomas a nuestras brigadistas.  Hubo reconocimiento sin fin a nuestro trabajo voluntario, aunque somos nosotros que nos sentimos que hemos ganado tanto de esta semana.  Cada uno de los albañiles—Saúl, Jovel, y César—rezaron a que nosotros tuviéramos un buen viaje a casa.

Y todos los que hablaron nos pidieron que regresáramos a ver  la comunidad.  Y uno sabe que cuando dicen, “Regresan!  Visitanos!  Nuestra casa es tu casa” que de verdad lo dicen en serio.  Mientras subimos al microbús para salir de la comunidad, todos nos siguieron.  Y mientras conducimos por la calle y nos vimos por atrás, pudimos ver a todos saludándonos.  Cómo es posible que tuvimos tanta suerte que llegar a este lugar tan especial?

Espero acordar de este sentimiento en mi corazón para siempre.
